A Message from the Artistic Director
FRANCESCO VENTRIGLIA | Artistic Director
Don Quixote: A World Premiere
Dear Esteemed Guests,
Welcome to this momentous occasion as we celebrate the world premiere of Don Quixote, a ballet that embodies the spirit of adventure, love, and the pursuit of dreams. I am profoundly grateful to have had the opportunity to choreograph this beautiful work, a journey that has been both exhilarating and humbling. Collaborating with our talented, committed, and generous dancers has been a true privilege, and I am in awe of their artistry and dedication.
The vibrant and colourful set designed by Italo Grassi, alongside the stunning costumes crafted by Gianluca Falaschi, handmade in Italy at the atelier D’inzillo, brings to life the whimsical world of Cervantes’ masterpiece. Each element of the production is infused with energy and passion, creating a visual feast that complements the enchanting score by Ludwig Minkus. The music resonates with the heart of our story, weaving together the emotions and dreams of our characters, while the libretto, inspired by the timeless tale of Don Quixote, invites us to embrace our own adventurous spirits.
This first season as Artistic Director has been nothing short of incredible. The support and enthusiasm from our audiences have fuelled our creativity and ambition, and I am excited about the dreams we are cultivating for the future. We have a lineup of thrilling projects ahead, and I cannot wait to share them with you.
Thank you for being here with us. Your presence enriches our performances and inspires us to reach new heights. I invite you to join us for the upcoming 2025/26 season—there are so many wonderful stories yet to be told, and we want you to be part of this journey.
With heartfelt gratitude,
FRANCESCO VENTRIGLIA
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

The Story
SPAIN
Lost in chivalric romances, the eccentric nobleman Don Quixote dreams he is a knight-errant, vowing to protect his imagined lady, Dulcinea. His fantasy is shattered by the chaotic arrival of his servant, Sancho Panza. Undeterred, Don Quixote appoints Sancho his squire. Finding soup cans as armor, Don Quixote suits up for battle and the unlikely pair embarks on a quest for chivalrous adventure.
Act One
Scene I – A Square in Barcelona
In a bustling square, the love between spirited Kitri and the penniless barber Basilio is threatened by her father’s desire for her to marry the wealthy nobleman Gamache. Their reunion is disrupted by the arrival of the eccentric Don Quixote, on his mighty stead, and his squire Sancho Panza. Mistaking Kitri for his idealized Dulcinea, Don Quixote’s presence further complicates matters, ultimately aiding Kitri and Basilio’s elopement as they flee Lorenzo and Gamache’s forced union. A chase ensues, with Don Quixote and Sancho joining the pursuit, determined to uphold their own sense of justice.
Act Two
Scene I – A Romani Camp
Fleeing the pursuit of Lorenzo and Gamache, the lovers Kitri and Basilio find refuge in a Romani camp situated near a windmill. Shortly after, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza arrive, followed by the persistent Lorenzo and Gamache. All are invited to a puppet show. The theatrical performance takes a bizarre turn when Don Quixote, in a fit of misguided chivalry, mistakes the Kitri puppet for his Dulcinea and dramatically destroys the stage with his sword. His confusion escalates as he then attacks a nearby windmill, believing it to be a menacing giant. The windmill’s sail catches him, sending him tumbling to the ground, unconscious. Amidst this ensuing chaos, Kitri and Basilio seize their chance to escape, leaving the bewildered Lorenzo and Gamache behind in their wake.
Act Two
Scene II – The Dream
Wounded and drifting in and out of consciousness, Don Quixote hallucinates a magical garden. In this imagined realm, the Queen of the Dryads rewards his bravery by presenting him with his beloved Dulcinea. Don Quixote passionately declares his devotion before the dream dissolves, leaving him to continue his unwavering pursuit of the idealized lady of his visions.
Act Three
Scene I – The Tavern
Kitri and Basilio’s joyful reunion is short-lived with the reappearance of the persistent Lorenzo and Gamache, still trailed by the ever-present Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Facing Lorenzo’s unwavering determination for Kitri to marry Gamache, the desperate lovers enact a final ruse. Basilio feigns a suicidal act of jealousy, prompting Kitri to plead for Don Quixote’s intervention. Believing Basilio is truly dying and recalling his chivalrous vows, Don Quixote compels Lorenzo to bless their union. Enraged, Gamache challenges Don Quixote but is defeated, paving the way for Basilio’s miraculous “recovery” and the lovers’ triumphant union.
Scene II – The Wedding
Their clever deception successful, Kitri and Basilio celebrate their marriage surrounded by joyful friends and an unexpected flower toss. Don Quixote, believing he has successfully righted a wrong by ensuring their union, recognizes the enduring call of his chivalrous quest. With renewed purpose, he valiantly departs to continue his noble deeds in honor of his beloved Dulcinea.

Francesco Ventriglia is an Italian ballet dancer, choreographer and Artistic Director. Having graduated from La Scala Ballet school, Ventriglia joined the ballet company of La Scala in 1997, making his debut as a soloist in William Forsythe’s In The Middle, Somewhat Elevated at La Scala in 1998, and in 1999 was cast as the Bronze Idol by Natalia Makarova in her production of La Bayadere.
He danced numerous soloist and principal roles with the company, including that of the Toreador in Roland Petit’s Carmen and Quasimodo in Notre Dame de Paris and also works by Nureyev, Balanchine, Ailey, Neumeier, Cranko, Preljocaj, Godani, Kylian, Guillem, and Bejart. Internationally, his performances with La Scala included Hilarion at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and at Covent Garden, opposite Sylvie Guillem in her creation of Giselle.
In 2010, he was appointed as Europe's youngest Artistic Director by the Florence Opera House at the age of 32, where he held the role as Artistic Director and principal choreographer for Maggio Danza until 2013. In 2014, he was named the Artistic Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Ventriglia’s tenure as Artistic Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet concluded in June 2017, however he continued his artistic relationship with the company, creating a new full-length ballet, Romeo and Juliet which toured nationally. Designed by triple Academy Award winner James Acheson, the production was both a critical and box office success. Reviewed as his ‘Love letter to New Zealand’, the production was hailed as a ‘splendid and triumphant’ production.
From January 2018, Ventriglia was adjunct Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Uruguay, Ballet Nacional Sodre alongside Igor Yebra. From 2020 to 2024, Ventriglia established himself in Sydney and co-founded the Sydney Choreographic Centre and Ensemble. In January 2024, Ventriglia was appointed Artistic Director of Alberta Ballet.
Ventriglia is also a choreographer of classical and contemporary ballet, having works performed internationally by companies such as the La Scala Ballet, Arena di Verona, Bolshoi Theatre, The Mariinsky Theatre, Grand Theatre du Geneve, Royal New Zealand Ballet, Ballet Nacional Sodre, and at the Venice Biannale.

Born in London, Gillian Whittingham trained at the London College of Dance and Drama and later in New York with Gabriela Darvash. She began her professional career as ballet mistress for Compagnia Italiana Balletto under Carla Fracci, choreographing several works directed by Beppe Menegatti. She has remounted major classical works such as Giselle, Romeo and Juliet, Les Sylphides, Petruška, and Le Spectre de la rose, working with prestigious dancers and companies throughout Europe.
In 1995, Whittingham co-founded the Olympic Dance Company with Mario Mattia Giorgetti, presenting works across Italy, London, and New York. As Principal Ballet Mistress at Teatro alla Scala for a decade, she collaborated with major choreographers such as Béjart, Petit, Forsythe, and Guillem. Her international work includes staging productions for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, and the Tokyo Ballet, among many others. Whittingham continues to play a vital role in preserving and restaging classical and contemporary works. Her recent projects include staging for Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, such as Nureyev’s Cinderella, Paquita with Eleonora Abbagnato, Carla Fracci’s Giselle with Julio Bocca, and assisted on Don Chisciotte and Paul Chalmer’s Nutcracker.

Ludwig Minkus (1826–1917) was an Austrian composer, who trained at the Wiener Musikverein and began his career as a violinist and Concertmaster at the Vienna Court Opera. In 1853, he relocated to Saint Petersburg, later serving as conductor for Prince Nikolai Yusupov’s orchestra then as Concertmaster and conductor at the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow. His success came through collaborations with Arthur Saint-Léon, but it was his partnership with Marius Petipa, particularly on Don Quixote (1869), that secured his reputation. Minkus was appointed official ballet composer of the Bolshoi and in Saint Petersburg, playing a key role in shaping 19th-century Russian ballet.
Minkus’ prolific works include scores for La Bayadère (1877), Camargo (1872), Paquita (1881, divertissement), and additional works for Le Corsaire (1881), among others. Though he maintained a long-standing partnership with Petipa, his prominence declined when the Imperial Theatres turned to Tchaikovsky in 1887.
Minkus also worked with Saint-Léon, taught at the Moscow Conservatory, and briefly gained recognition in Paris with La Source and Néméa. His final work, Mlada (composed in 1879, premiered in 1896), preceded a quiet retirement to Vienna. Despite his monumental contribution to ballet, he died in poverty in 1917.

A TRIBUTE TO THE DANCERS WHOSE DEDICATION HAS SHAPED OUR COMPANY’S STORY
-
Mariko Kondo joined Alberta Ballet in 2007 and over her 18-year career, she has become well known to Alberta Ballet audiences for her exquisite poise and grace.
“I look back and I had an amazing career. I wish I could talk to everyone, one-on-one, and say thank you for supporting me. I feel so fortunate that I’ve been able to dance since I was six years old, that I was able to dance after having kids, and that I have a husband who always supports me.
Francesco has really supported me, and says I still have a place if I want it, but I feel I’m at a place where I’m open to lots of opportunities. And I’m excited about what this change in schedule will mean for making time for my family.
There have been so many great choreographers, stagers and designers, and of course, Alberta Ballet’s artistic directors over my time with the company.
It’s such a special relationship in the studio. Every time we’re getting to perform, we’re all working toward a goal—and it’s the trust we have, and the trust others place in us, that makes it possible. I’m so grateful to the dancers I’ve worked with, because that trust gives us the freedom to take risks and express something real.”
-
“As I take my final bow, my heart is filled with gratitude for the years spent at Alberta Ballet. I joined the school in 2010, dreaming of a life in dance, and in 2015, that dream became real.
I’ve been blessed with more than I could have imagined. Friends who became family, beautiful moments on and off stage, and personal growth both as a person and an artist.
A heartfelt thank you to Francesco, my director, for giving me the most memorable year of my career. To everyone who has supported me and shared this journey, thank you. I will always carry the memories I’ve made here dearly.”
-
“After dancing since the age of 4, and 7 incredible years with Alberta Ballet, I’ve made the bittersweet decision to retire from the stage. This company has been so much more than a workplace — it’s been a second home, a place of constant growth, and a community of inspiring, supportive people.
The lessons, laughter, and connections I’ve gained here will stay with me forever.
As I step into a new chapter, I’m pursuing a career in real estate — a path that excites me and allows me to build a future for my growing family, while carrying forward everything ballet has taught me.
Thank you to the audience. Your energy, love, and applause made every moment on stage unforgettable!”
