Welcome to Alberta Ballet School’s Annual Winter Showcase.

Thank you for joining us for this evening. Tonight is an important development in the students training. Their accomplishments within preparing for these solos are the culmination of hard work and  dedication. To our brilliant students, tonight is a celebration of your passion and commitment to achieving your goals and dreams and that makes our school community so vibrant. Your performances are not only a testament to your individual growth but also a source of inspiration for all those in attendance.

I’d like to extend heartfelt gratitude to all of our teachers who have prepared the students for their variations and solos’s as well to our esteemed panel of judges: Alberta Ballet Artistic Director Francesco Vengriglia, Alberta Ballet School Artistic Advisor Diane van Schoor, retired Ballet BC dancer (and former Alberta Ballet School alum!) Racheal Prince and Alberta Ballet Soloist Dancer Aaron Anker. Thank you for your sharp eye and expertise! We look forward to the insightful guidance you will share with our aspiring artists.

Adjudication Team

  • In January 2024, Francesco arrived in Calgary, Alberta to become Artistic Director for Alberta Ballet. His first curation, which brought together the company and the school on the Jubilee stage, took place in February.

    Francesco began his professional dance career at the ballet company of La Scala in 1997, after having graduated from La Scala Ballet School.

    He began his choreographic career whilst a dancer at La Scala, having created a diverse repertoire for the Ballet School of La Scala, his own company Heliopolis and other freelance works.

    In 2014, Francesco was appointed as the Royal New Zealand Ballet's Artistic Director, and the following year, led the company on an international tour (The UK and Italy).

    Regularly interviewed internationally in both print and radio media as an advocate for ballet and Italian dance, Francesco was invited to be a judge of The Genée International Ballet Competition 2016, alongside other judges David McAllister of the Australian Ballet and Kevin O'Hare of the Royal Ballet.

    Francesco's tenure as Artistic Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet concluded in June 2017, however he continued his artistic relationship with the company, creating a new full-length ballet, Romeo and Juliet which toured nationally.

    From January 2018 until December 2020 Francesco was Adjunct Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Uruguay, alongside Artistic Director Igor Yebra.

    In 2020 Francesco established himself in Sydney and co-founded the Sydney Choreographic Centre with Neil Christopher.

  • Diane van Schoor is currently the Alberta Ballet School’s Artistic Advisor. Diane was instrumental in the creation and implementation of the Professional Division Curriculum in 2017, and Diane visits the Alberta Ballet School a few times a season to assess our students and teachers to ensure the highest quality of training possible.

    Diane was born in South Africa. During her early dance career, she was trained by Jennifer Louw. She attended the University of Cape Town Ballet School and danced professionally for CAPAB Ballet. She then opted to create the School of Classical Ballet and went on to hold a lectureship in Movement Studies in the Dramatic Arts Faculty at the University of Stellenbosch.

    Diane’s experience in the dance community is rich. She has taught at many of the world’s leading schools and companies including The Royal Ballet and both Upper and Lower Schools, The Paris Opera Ballet School, The Vaganova Academy, The National Ballet School of Canada, Royal Winnipeg and Alberta Ballet and their Schools in Canada, New English Ballet Theatre, the Bartholin Seminars in Copenhagen and in the USA, Sweden, China and Japan.

    As the past Artistic Director of The Cecchetti Society of Southern Africa, Diane holds The Enrico Cecchetti Mabel Ryan Medal, Enrico Cecchetti Diploma and Fellowships of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing London [ISTD] and Royal Society for the Arts. She is the recipient of the Cecchetti Dedication Award 2000, for services to Ballet in South Africa and in 2011 was awarded The Enrico Cecchetti Gold Medal by the ISTD – a lifetime achievement award in recognition of her promotion of classical ballet around the world. She is a Trustee of the Cecchetti Society Trust in the UK and an ABT® Certified Teacher in Pre-Primary through Level 6, 7 and Partnering of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.

    More recently Diane still finds herself teaching across the world. She joined the artistic staff of The Royal Ballet School in 2000 and she held the position of Ballet Principal of The Royal Ballet School, White Lodge from 2004-2014. During that time, she taught Graduates at White Lodge, 2nd Year Diploma at the Upper School, choreographed for the Royal Opera House Main Stage for the Royal Ballet School’s annual performances and for the National Youth Ballet of Great Britain.

  • Racheal Prince received her training at the Quinte Ballet School and is a graduate of the School of Alberta Ballet’s Pre-professional Program. She began her professional career with The Alberta Ballet Company and after four season she joined Ballet BC when she performed internationally for 12 seasons. Her performance highlights include Jorma Elo’s 1st Flash, Johan Inger’s Walking Mad and B.R.I.S.A, William Forsythe’s Enemy in the Figure and Work Within Work as well as many works by George Balanchine. Racheal is currently the Assistant Rehearsal Director for Ballet BC and has set the ensemble work for Medhi Walerski’s Romeo and Juliet as well as Prelude. In 2019 Racheal and her partner Brandon Lee Alley created Dance//Novella, a small dance collective that focuses on creation and collaboration.

  • Originally from Portland, Oregan, Aaron moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia at a young age where he began his ballet training. He completed his schooling at Indiana University and later went on to work with Philadelphia Ballet (formerly Pennsylvania Ballet) as a member of the corps de ballet. He has had the opportunity to perform many roles throughout his career including Waltz Boy in George Balanchine’s Serenade, Basilio in Angel Corella’s Don Quixote, and Tybalt in Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo & Juliet.
