Love. Sorcery.
TRIUMPH.

This fantastical tale has at its heart a passionate coming of age story. Forces of evil attempt to thwart the love between young Prince Siegfried and the Swan Queen, Odette.

Add in the majesty of Tchaikovsky’s symphonic score and the result is a masterpiece for the ages. This iconic classical ballet will stir your soul and capture your heart.

Alberta Ballet’s reimagined Swan Lake will be a momentous return to the stage and an unforgettable reunion with our audiences.

We have arrived at a long-awaited moment!

We’re so grateful to all of you who have held on to tickets and anticipated the curtain rising on Alberta Ballet’s Swan Lake

Alberta Ballet had already begun rehearsing this production when our studios closed in March 2020. When we returned to these preparations last month, I discovered that the ballet was unfolding in new ways. The year-long pause in live performance was informing our work. This is not the ballet we would have performed at the end of our 19/20 season. This ballet is a far more intimate and vulnerable interpretation. We embraced a process in our studio where the art evolves and responds to the artists. This approach has been both beautiful and reaffirming.

In this performance, you will be treated to Alberta Ballet’s dancers driving their stories forward through the lens of Swan Lake. I have been astonished and awed by the depths of creativity and emotion that they have poured into this staging.

Swan Lake is by its nature deeply expressive and passionate. It celebrates the power of human connection. In this moment of reunification, it is all the more poignant.

Thank you so much for your patience, your enthusiasm and your belief in the power of Alberta Ballet’s live performances. I hope this return to shared experiences uplifts and inspires each of you.

SWAN LAKE LIBRETTO

THE PROLOGUE

A maiden is dancing in a clearing. She is light-hearted and carefree and fails to notice she isn’t alone. A mysterious winged creature has seen her and is approaching. She only becomes aware of the danger after it’s too late. The creature’s large wings fold around her. She struggles, but the creature’s grasp is too powerful. The creature releases his grip and reveals the maiden’s transformation into a beautiful swan-like figure.

ACT I

THE PALACE COURTYARD

Prince Siegfried and his friends are gathered for an early celebration of the Prince’s 21st birthday. Most prominent are the antics of Benno. It’s clear that Benno and Siegfried have long been a raucous pair, and that Benno encourages a carefree demeanor in Siegfried.

The Queen arrives, prompting a pause in the festivities. She expresses her hope that Siegfried’s attention will finally be drawn to a suitable maiden and that he will begin thinking of family and his role as future King.

The festivities begin again, and Benno proposes an evening hunt. Siegfried agrees, despite being weighed down by the expectations from of his mother. Siegfried, Benno and their friends head to the forest.

A CLEARING IN THE WOODS

The friends enter a clearing, and someone spots a target. Everyone but Siegfried enthusiastically runs into the woods. Siegfried, on his own, looks around and spots a swan in the distance. With a start, he realizes he’s seeing not a swan, but a woman. The woman notices Siegfried and his crossbow and confronts him. Siegfried sets aside his weapon to show he means no harm.

The woman introduces herself as Odette. She shares how she has been imprisoned by a sorcerer and how his wicked spell has trapped her and her friends as swans.

Suddenly, they are interrupted. The sorcerer, Rothbart, is surveying the clearing, and he sees Odette with a figure. Rothbart calls Odette, and Siegfried dashes into the shadows. On Rothbart’s command, the stage is flooded with the maidens also caught in Rothbart’s spell. Siegfried returns and realizes he is drawn to Odette in a way he’s never experienced. As dawn approaches, he is eager to express his devotion. He pledges his eternal love to her.

Odette takes Siegfried’s hand and urges him to go before Rothbart returns. Rothbart catches the exchange between Siegfried and Odette and is enraged. He recognizes Siegfried, and he recalls there is an upcoming royal celebration. Rothbart conjures up a magical being, Odile. Odile is inspired by the appearance of Odette but is filled with Rothbart’s malice. Rothbart plans to use Odile to capture Siegfried’s heart at the evening’s party.

ACT II

THE PALACE COURTYARD

Several prominent guests are arriving. Siegfried enters also, his head still spinning from his encounter the night before. Benno greets Siegfried, as does the Queen. She has invited five princesses to the party, and brimming with optimism, the Queen asks Siegfried which one catches his eye. Siegfried, still intoxicated by the memory of Odette, replies that they are each exquisite, but he is not interested in any of them. As he makes this proclamation, trumpets announce new visitors.

Odile and Rothbart enter. Rothbart makes a grand overture to the Queen and presents Odile. Siegfried is captivated, as are many of the guests. Siegfried’s enchantment with the beguiling Odile is clear as the two perform the Black Swan Pas de Deux. Rothbart seizes the moment and uses his magic to summon Odette. Odette quickly grasps Rothbart’s intent when she surveys the scene. She is appalled and dismayed at how Rothbart is entangling Siegfried in emotional torment.

Siegfried is delighted by Odile. He tells the Queen that Odile is the one he wishes to marry. Rothbart is ecstatic at how easily his plan played out and urges Siegfried to formalize his commitment. As Siegfried raises his hand and pledges his love, Rothbart grabs Siegfried and spins him around to reveal Odette in the distance. He then charges the Queen to point out her son’s duplicity. Odile revels in the drama, heightening Siegfried’s humiliation by turning her back on him.

Rothbart and Odile then vanish, and Siegfried realizes his impetuousness has been his undoing. He races off in search of Odette.

A CLEARING IN THE WOODS

The swan-maidens are in clearing, and all is enveloped in a thick layer of fog. Odette arrives, frantic and angered. She recounts the events from the party, and the swan-maidens try to calm her. Rothbart enters. He swells to display his power, striking fear in all but Odette. The stand-off escalates until the action is disrupted by the sound of someone approaching. Rothbart reluctantly backs away. The swan-maidens also retreat.

Siegfried charges in, desperately searching for Odette. He finds Odette and collapses at her feet begging for forgiveness. Understanding that Siegfried is also a victim of Rothbart’s sorcery, Odette explains that she cannot take this imprisonment any longer and must confront Rothbart. Rothbart arrives, and a fight ensues. Heavy fog rolls in. Rothbart tries to separate Odette from Siegfried. The struggle continues, and Odette overpowers Rothbart, throwing him aside. Seeing Odette’s courageous defiance, the swan-maidens are emboldened. They swarm Rothbart and when they disperse, Rothbart’s lifeless body is revealed, strewn across a rock. Siegfried stumbles downstage and falls to the ground.

A maiden emerges from the fog. It is Odette, fully freed from the spell.

GETTING TO THE STAGE

We’re sharing a behind the scenes look at what it takes to get a production like Swan Lake to the stage. Undoubtedly the most popular ballet in the world, we can’t wait to come back with such a spectacular production. In this episode, you’ll hear from our production team on what goes into preparing the costumes and sets before the curtain goes up. Video by Nigel Goodwin

CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON Staging And Additional Choreography

Co-Artistic Director Christopher Anderson will begin his tenure as Alberta Ballet’s Artistic Director in July 2022.

Before joining Alberta Ballet in 2015, Anderson enjoyed a 16-year career in professional dance. A graduate of Purchase College’s SUNY Conservatory of Dance, he launched his career at Boston Ballet, and two years later was invited to join Salt Lake City’s Ballet West. During his career, he danced leading roles both nationally and internationally and further had several roles created for him by some of today’s most exciting choreographers.

In 2015, Alberta Ballet offered Anderson a contract as Ballet Master. Anderson was motivated to accept, given the strong talent he saw in the company’s dancers. He retired from professional dance and joined Alberta Ballet’s leadership team. At the end of his first season, he took on an expanded role of Associate Artistic Director.

Seeing that the company had a strong foundation of contemporary and theatrical works in its repertoire, Anderson chose to set classics for his first full-length works for Alberta Ballet. He premiered Cinderella in 2017 and The Sleeping Beauty in 2018. In 2019, he also premiered a contemporary one-act Sixth Breath (2019).

Presently, Anderson is setting Swan Lake for an Alberta Ballet premiere in October. The 2021-22 season will also revive his production of Cinderella.

CHRISTIANA BENNETT Rehearsal Director

Christiana is in her fifth season working as part of Alberta Ballet’s artistic team. Previous to her position as Rehearsal Director at Alberta Ballet, she was a Principal dancer with Ballet West for 16 years. While dancing with Ballet West, Bennett was given the opportunity to dance throughout the United States, Europe and Asia where she was met with international acclaim. Some of her favourite ballets to perform were Swan Lake, Balanchine’s Diamonds and Serenade, Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, Nicolo Fonte’s Bolero, Jiri Kylian’s Sinfonietta, William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated and Aszure Barton’s Happy Little Things.  Christiana also had many roles created for her by choreographers such as Matthew Neenan, Nicolo Fonte, Helen Pickett, Val Caniparoli, Christopher Anderson, Garrett Smith and Charlotte Boye-Christensen.

As a native of Massachusetts, most of her training was along the Eastern seaboard at prestigious schools. However, she attributes her career to the training received at Pacific Northwest Ballet School under the tutelage of Francis Russell.

Tchaikovsky Headshot bw.jpg

PYOTR TCHAIKOVSKY Composer

Tchaikovsky was a leading Russian composer of the late 19th century whose works are notable for their melodic inspiration and their orchestration. He is regarded as the master composer for classical ballet, as demonstrated by his scores for Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty. Among the most subjective of composers, Tchaikovsky is inseparable from his music. His work is a manifestation, sometimes charming, often showy, of repressed feelings that became more and more despairing in his later years and were most fully expressed in his Sixth Symphony. Though his later work rejected conscious Russian nationalism, its underlying sentiment and character are as distinctively Russian as that of the Russian nationalist composers.

This dance drama is adapted from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, exploring this psychological landscape from a fresh perspective. Through the main characters extracted from the original comes a story of life, death, and love. The ghost of the murdered king haunts the living. The prince avenges his father, thereby destroying love and life. The new king, the queen and the courtiers engage in transactions of soul and flesh, struggling between good and evil.

Founded in 2008 and led by artistic director/choreographer Yuanyuan Wang, the Beijing Dance Theater (BDT) has secured their reign on China’s dance stage with stunning dance productions.

This world premiere promises to be an exhilarating culmination of Alberta Ballet’s portrait ballet series.

Jean Grand-Maître explores humanity’s growing addiction to technology in this contemporary sci-fi ballet, inspired by the music of the late great David Bowie.

Phi will be conceived by six world-class designers and will feature more than 13 monumental compositions spanning the entire career of the legendary songwriter, including Heroes, Ashes to Ashes, Heathen and I’m Afraid of Americans.

Phi will explore the contrasting aesthetics of the futuristic virtual world with the natural beauty of the disappearing world of true reality.

Taking inspiration from the 1697 Charles Perrault version, Christopher’s retelling of Cinderella features all of the best-loved characters from the original story including a wicked stepmother, comedic stepsisters, a dashing young prince and of course, a magical fairy godmother.

Life-long ballet fan Barbara Palmer graciously donates back to her community

In the spring of 2021, the Alberta Ballet Foundation gratefully received a $3M donation from long-time supporter Barbara Palmer.

Barbara, who has called Calgary home since 1952, has been a lifelong advocate, donor and subscriber to Alberta Ballet. The mother of four and grandmother of six credits the Ballet with creating treasured family traditions.

“I would like to see the Ballet become self-supporting at the high level they have shown throughout the years,” Barbara said. “The pandemic has proven that no one can control attendance numbers or ticket sales, but we can protect the quality of the productions at their current standard, well into the future.”

In the past, Barbara has donated to support projects like Alice in Wonderland and Dangerous Liaisons – two of her all-time favourite Alberta Ballet productions.

Barbara hopes her example inspires others in the community.

“Supporting the arts everywhere is important, but in Alberta it’s critical because we are geographically separate. If we want to see great talent, we must provide for it here. We can’t just drive to Montreal or Vancouver for the night. And there is no substitute for a live performance.” – Barbara Palmer

Through the Foundation, the money will offer Alberta Ballet the opportunity to look ahead and focus on growing the Company through the development of new works. Co-Artistic Directors Jean Grand-Maître and Christopher Anderson are both heartened by Barbara’s powerful endorsement for the Ballet’s vision.

“Barbara Palmer’s extraordinary support expresses her deep love for dance and for its potential to transform societies. Coupled with her steadfast commitment to enhance the life of all Albertans, her generous donation will generate an enthusiasm and a renewed dedication from the community,” Jean said. “Her kindness is now our lifeline to a more stable future, and for decades to come.”

“We are so honoured by her faith in our plan for the future, and her belief in our ability to uplift and inspire Albertans through the creation of new Alberta-made productions,” Christopher said. “It’s a demonstration of her passion for the art form, and her gift is an everlasting commitment to share dance with more Albertans.”

Thanks to Barbara’s lead gift, Alberta Ballet is launching a $15M endowment campaign.

Nutcracker-White.png

It’s Christmas Eve and a young girl named Klara has just received the most magical gift from her eccentric Uncle Drosselmeyer – a handsome nutcracker doll.

Little does she know as she falls asleep, weary from the family’s holiday celebrations, that her new toy is about to spark her imagination and take her on a dreamy adventure to the Land of Sweets! Join Klara and her nutcracker doll as they embark on a magical journey featuring epic battles with some pesky rats, a snow queen, a beautiful fairy, a dashing cavalier and of course, her nutcracker prince.
